5 Common Beginner Beard Mistakes
Many of us make mistakes when growing our beards, especially if it's our first. In an effort to try to help minimize these setbacks, here are five of the most common beard mistakes and how to avoid them.
Lack of Patience
This is a mistake that can be very detrimental to the beard growth. It's important to have realistic expectations when deciding to grow your beard. However, this is a lot easier said than done, especially if it's your first beard. Uncertain or unrealistic expectations can lead to discouragement and ultimately shaving. Realize that it takes most men 3-4 months to grow a decent full beard. Relax and enjoy the process!
Bad Beard Trims
It can be really hard to tell when and if a beard trim is needed. I always encourage the Yeard (one year of untouched growth), but if your situation doesn't allow for that, always grow longer than your goal length before getting a trim. Don't let impatience or bad beard days result in a botched or premature beard trim. Bad beard trims happen all too often, I always encourage guys to seek a professional beard trim, especially if it's the first trim of a new beard. Just do you research and it should go as planned!
Playing with it too much
This is a tough one, especially for me. One of the best things about having a beard is touching it, combing it and stroking it. But playing with or tugging at your beard excessively or aggressively can put a lot of stress on the hair follicle, causing it to shed prematurely. When touching your beard always use a gentle and open hand. It can also be very beneficial to get a good wide tooth pocket comb and use it when you get the urge to touch your beard.
Bad Beard Products
In the beginning, it's easy to think that all hair is the same. So why not just use regular shampoo and conditioner? Commercial shampoo and soaps contain harsh chemical surfactants and detergents that can really dry out your beard and the skin underneath. This can result in a coarse, brittle and very itchy beard experience. Pay close attention to the ingredients in the products you choose to use on your beard. Steer clear of silicones and harsh chemical surfactants such as sodium lauryl sulfate. Always look for natural oils and ingredients you can easily pronounce.
Beard Envy
There's definitely no shortage of beard selfies out there and it can be difficult not to compare your beard to others. But this can lead to feelings of inadequacy and discouragement. Don't set yourself up for failure and disappointment by comparing your beard to some of the best in the world. It's important to remember that every beard is unique, embrace what is unique about your beard and do not compare your beard to others!
