The First Beard is the Toughest

The First Beard is the Toughest

For some men, growing a beard comes really easy, but I think for most of us the opposite is true. Of all the beards we’ll grow throughout our lives, the first one is probably the toughest.

In my experience, when growing your first beard you’re not sure what to expect and not really sure what you’re doing. Those around you have never seen you with a beard, your loved ones may object to the change in your appearance which may cause you to hear a flurry of negative comments in the early stages. You may look in the mirror and even start to doubt your appearance yourself. You see other beards and think “Wow, his beard looks much better than mine.” All of this coupled with an itch you’re not used to can really make the urge to shave strong, causing it to be really tough to make it through your first successful beard. But getting through that first beard is imperative. You WILL go through awkward stages that you hate and think “This looks really bad; I should shave it”. The easy thing to do is shave, but once you get through that first beard it will be so much easier the second, third and every time after that.

Here are some tips I’ve learned to help you get through your first beard:

  • Set a goal and stick to it – This is quite possibly the most helpful tip. Set a timeframe, I suggest at least 6 months and resist all urges to trim or shape it during this period to really see what your beard is capable of. Setting a goal will help you refrain from giving in to all of the negative pressures and caving (shaving). This will give your beard sufficient time to flourish.
  • Beard oil, beard balm & beard wash – Although not necessary to grow a beard, beard products definitely help make the process more enjoyable. They can relieve beard itch, beard flakes and help to improve the overall health, look and feel of your beard.
  • Don’t stare or get close in the mirror – This is a tough one, I know how hard it is to stay out of the mirror when growing your beard, but try to resist. Getting close in the mirror and picking out every patch or misplaced hair will only make you doubt its appearance even more. Remember, we are our own worst critics, try not to be so hard on yourself and your beard.
  • Don’t compare your beard to other beards - This can lead to feelings of inadequacy and discouragement. Don't set yourself up for failure and disappointment by comparing your beard to some of the best in the world, remember that every beard is unique and embrace what is unique about your beard
  • Have a discussion with those close to you – If someone important in your life is urging you to shave, have that discussion with them. Whether it be your significant other, parent, sibling or friend, try to help them understand how important growing this beard is to you. Ask them to give it a chance, once you’ve reached your goal you can decide if it’s a good fit for you or not.
