7 Tips to Get the Most out of Your Beard

So you put down the razor, now what? Sometimes it can be hard to know what to do in order to help maximize your beard.

Here are a few quick tips to help you get the most out of your beard!

Patience is Key

As the age old adage goes, good things come to those who wait. In this case, those who resist the urge to shave. It is imperative to let your beard grow freely for the first 3 months with NO TRIMS. Your beard hairs grow at different rates and this will give your beard time to really show you what it’s made of. This will help you determine the look or shape you’re trying to achieve.

Choose Your Shape

After you have given your beard enough time to blossom and you’ve reached a length BEYOND that of your goal length, it’s time to start thinking about shape. If that’s what you want of course, some men just like to let it grow all natural and that’s great as well! When choosing a beard shape it is important to make sure it fits your personal preference and helps compliment your face shape. I go into much more detail about choosing beard shape in this video.

Maintenance Trimming

If you’re looking for a well-groomed and maintained beard, it’s crucial to know when you need a trim. I always recommend going to get a beard trim from a professional, one who specializes in beards. I personally don’t trust myself trimming my own beard, that second set of eyes and skilled hands are invaluable in my opinion. A slight maintenance trim every few months or so can really clean up your look, make it look fuller and even look longer in some cases. Trims can also take care of split ends and promote faster and healthier growth.

Wash It, But NOT TOO Often

Clean, healthy and exfoliated skin will help promote healthy beard growth, but there can be too much of a good thing. Avoid over washing, as it will dry out your beard and skin underneath, causing brittle hair and itchy skin. Also, be sure to use a natural, gentle beard wash that’s not packed full of harsh chemical surfactants like most commercial shampoos. I always recommend starting with washing once or twice a week and adjust depending on your needs and life style. Obviously if you work outside you’re going to need to wash your beard more than someone who works in an office.

Keep it Oiled

The regular use of beard oil will help keep the skin under your beard hydrated and moisturized which will promote healthier growth. Beard oil helps in taming and grooming, not to mention it gives your beard a nice lustrous shine. Beard oil makes the beard growing experience much more enjoyable, you’re more likely to stick with it.

Train Your Beard

Be sure to brush and comb your beard daily to help train it to grow in the desired direction. There are a ton of different tools for combing and brushing your beard, here’s a guide to help you choose the right one for you. Beard balm will also help in the training of your beard, it helps to tame and train your unruly flyaways so they start to lay down on their own.

The ‘Stache

Last but not least, don’t forget to show your mustache some TLC. It’s easy to overlook at times, I’m definitely guilty, but a great looking mustache is a key component to an epic beard. Unless, you’ve chosen a whaler, in which case a mustache is not needed. Mustache wax can help to shape it and start training it to grow in the desired direction.
